Convention Update

The 2015 Convention in Anniston/Talladega is shaping up to be a great one! Here is the latest information.

At this time, there are 29 tables reserved for member displays. Members are bringing displays from all over the country. This is a rare opportunity to see these private collections all together in one place. The displays will be located at the CMP’s Talladega Marksmanship Park Clubhouse.

A general member’s meeting will be held in conjunction with the farewell breakfast on Sunday morning. Members are welcome to discuss any issues they may have relating to the GCA. Several members of the GCA Board of Directors will be in attendance, and questions are welcome.

CMP is working out the final details for tours of their Anniston facility. Match competitors will be given the opportunity to take a tour without conflicting with the matches.

The GCA room block/special rate at Hilton Garden Inn will expire after Sept. 10. After that date, rooms will be at their normal rates subject to availability. Call (256) 831-0083 right away if you need to make a reservation.

CMP is generously making their fleet of golf carts available at no charge for convention goers to tour the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park. They are stationed at the clubhouse. Each cart seats four people. Please limit usage to 30 minutes so all the attendees get a chance to use them to cruise the park and get an overview of the facilities.

Of particular interest to shooters: Please be advised that there are vending machines at the park, but not full-scale concessions. You are welcome to bring in your own food and drink (no alcohol allowed) and there are picnic tables available. With the current level of participation, the Garand match on Saturday will definitely still be going at lunch time. Shooters are advised to bring a lunch.

If you want to shoot in the special matches for GCA members, you must enter in advance. Registration will cut off on Sept. 24.

Competitors will fire all rounds of the matches without leaving the firing point. Even though electronic scoring is utilized, a verifier for each competitor is required. At this point we have 3 relays for the John C. Garand Match, and a fourth may need to be created. Each relay is expected to take 1 hour. Special requests for squadding will be handled at the match check-in.

The CMP is conducting an EIC Match on Sunday morning, Sept. 27. This is unrelated to the GCA Convention. For shooters that are interested, enter here: https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=match&task=edit&match=13263

If you haven’t already registered to attend, it’s not too late! Online registration is still open at this time, and registration forms were inserted with the Summer issue of the GCA Journal. Click here to register.

This is going to be a memorable and historic convention and we’d love to see you there!

Marty Morgan 2015 GCA Convention Featured Speaker

Here is another good reason to attend this year’s Convention in Talledega – Martin Morgan will be the featured speaker. He is a contributor to the GCA Journal and also hosted and narrated “America’s Rifle – The M1 Garand”, GCA’s program on DVD. But there is a lot more about him you probably didn’t know.marty-2

Martin K.A. Morgan is an author/historian who specializes in American and military history. He holds a BA in history from the University of Alabama (1991), an MA in history from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1996), and is currently a history doctoral candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He is the author of Down To Earth: The 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Normandy (Schiffer, 2004) and The Americans on D-Day: A Photographic History of the Normandy Invasion (Zenith Press, 2014), and he contributes frequently to World War II Quarterly, Shooting Illustrated and The American Rifleman. He has also contributed to such other publications as Aviation History, World War II, World War II History, Armchair General, 39/45 (France) and After the Battle (England).

In addition to publishing, for over a decade Martin has appeared on television programs relating to historical subjects on PBS, Discovery, National Geographic, History, H2, The Weather Channel, Syfy, Oxygen, the Outdoor Channel, The Smithsonian Channel, and The American Heroes Channel. These programs range in subject from D-Day, to Pearl Harbor, to how whiskey, Christmas, and chocolate changed history. In late 2014/early 2015 he contributed to an episode of NOVA with Dr. Robert Ballard. A co-production between National Geographic and WGBH Boston, the show was titled Nazi Attack on America, and it advanced new theories about the sinking of the German U-Boat U-166 in the Gulf of Mexico in July 1942. With a background as a park ranger and a museum professional, Martin’s experience in public marty-3history paved the way for the publishing and broadcasting work he does today. Since 2002, he has been leading battlefield tours around the world, especially in Europe.

It is a rare treat for him to make a personal appearance, and we are fortunate that his schedule was not already booked. His presentation is sure to be one you will enjoy and remember.

The opportunity to shoot your rifle at CMP’s state-of-the-art Talladega Marksmanship Park, the camaraderie of fellow M1 enthusiasts, displays from private collections, and a presentation from Martin Morgan: any one of these is a good reason to attend the 2015 Convention. All of the above put together makes the 2015 Convention a “don’t miss it” event.
